‘The First Distiller’ – Leo Tolstoy

This week we continue our Russian Season with a look at a comic ‘playlet’ from the pen of Tolstoy. A hilarious morality tale as devils tempt the human race to immorality via the drink.
More well-known for his lengthy novels, War and Peace and Anna Kerinina, Tolstoy also wrote for the stage, both serious dramas and comedies, showing a deftness of touch in both. We’ll be looking at this short play and using it as an inspiration over the next two weeks to come up with our own morality tale fit for Britain in the 21st century.
